Pre-Professional Information

PRE-PROFESSIONAL COURSEWORK

Students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s of science (BS) degree in biology with an emphasis in pre-professional work (pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-vet, physical therapy, etc.) are encouraged to consider taking the following courses.  We also recommend that these students strongly consider a minor in Chemistry.

The outline presented here is based on entrance requirements for regional medical and osteopathic schools, dental schools and veterinary schools.  Students applying to a particular institution may find that the school of their choice requires fewer (or even perhaps more) physical science and mathematics courses.

Pre-professional students must complete general education courses as outlined in the catalog and must score well on the nationally administered exams such as the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES:

14 semester hours (12 semester hours of lecture & 2 semester hours of formal lab) are required. Courses for non-science majors or for health career majors (nursing, pharmacy, allied health sciences, etc.) will NOT satisfy the required coursework. All required coursework must be applicable towards a traditional science degree. Includes all Biological Science courses applied toward Baccalaureate degree in traditional science fields.

Biology for Science Majors I and II & Labs

  • Human A&P I and II
  • Microbiology
  • Genetics
  • General Ecology
  • Cell and Molecular Biology
  • Seminar in Biology
  • Introduction to Biotechnology
  • Invertebrate Zoology
