The first step to choosing which major is best for you is to assess your strengths.  Career Development has partnered with TypeFocus to provide you with the tools to:

  • Assess your strengths
  • Explore occupations
  • Set goals
  • Search for jobs
  • Succeed in any job

TypeFocus provides assessments to evaluate your personality, interests, and values to narrow your search from thousands of career choices to a few dozen.  Log in here to begin your assessment.

Personality Assessment

When you complete the TypeFocus personality assessment, you will be provided with personality reports based upon the work of Swiss psychoanalyst C.G. Jung.  It was Jung's research on psychological types that inspired the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator.  The TypeFocus Type Indicator has been scientifically validated.  Upon completion of the assessment, you will be provided with your results, along with an interpretation of the results and a summary of the types of careers that you might find most appealing.

Interests Assessment

The TypeFocus interests assessment is based on the O*NET Interest Profiler which measures six types of Holland occupational interests:Realistic (R), Investigative (I), Artistic (A), Social (S), Enterprising (E), and Conventional (C), collectively called RIASEC.  Upon completion of this assessment, you will be provided with your results along with a description of the occupations that match your interests.

Values Assessment

The TypeFocus values assessment is based on the O*NET Values research regarding Occupational Values Profiles, which provide a link between O*NET occupations and values-based assessments.

Tying it all Together

After completing each of the assessments, click on the Explore link at the top of the page to see which occupations are a good fit for you based on your personality, interests, and values.  Click on the link for the occupation to learn more about it, including a description of the occupation, an in-depth look at the training and education required, and related careers.  Your assessment results and any careers you save will then be available in your portfolio.
