Orientation Frequently Asked Questions


Overnight SOAR for Freshmen:

Q: What time should I arrive at SOAR?
A: You can check-in anytime between 11:30am and 12:30pm

Q: Can I see a tentative schedule of the event?
A: We send these out about a week out from the event. Check the e-mail you submitted on the SOAR registration form.

Q: What is TSI testing and do I need to test?
A: You can read more about TSI testing and exemptions here. To be sure, always check with advising@tamut.edu to confirm you are exempt.

Q: What is the Math Placement Exam or ALEKS?
A: We determine your preparedness for Calculus I by requiring that you complete an online assessment known as the ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning Assessment at SOAR. If you are majoring in one of the following majors, you need to plan to take this assessment at 9am Thursday: Biology, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or Mathematics Education. 

Q: Can I bring a guest to SOAR?
A: Parents, guardians or family members are welcome to attend. Guests are charged a $25/person fee and it is to be paid on-site when checking in. We accept cash and credit cards. Friends are not allowed to attend SOAR.

Q: What will my parent/guardian do while I'm attending SOAR?
A: We have a separate parent/guardian track with the same educational content you will be receiving. Parents receive a campus tour, meet academic leaders/faculty as well as hear from important departments on campus such as financial aid and the registrar. 

Q: Do you provide lodging for guests?
A: No, parents are not allowed to stay on campus. We have set up discounted hotel blocks at area hotels. You can find those here.

Q: What should I pack or bring to SOAR?
A: You can find this information here.

Q: What meals are provided?
A:  For students: Dinner on Thursday / Breakfast and Lunch on Friday.
     For guests: Wine/Cheese Reception on Thursday / Breakfast and Lunch on Friday

Q: Where do we park?
A: You will use the second entrance into campus (the entrance AFTER the brick sign with flag poles) and park in the Bringle Lake Village residence hall parking lot. Follow the signs.

Q: When can I register for classes?
A: Registration for freshmen students occurs during the SOAR that you sign up for. You will leave SOAR advised and registered for classes. You must attend SOAR to register for classes.

Q: How long until my hold is removed?
A: Please allow at least 2 business days for someone to review your form submission and remove your hold. During busier seasons, it may take up to 3-4 business days. We process them as quickly as possible.

New Student Conference for Transfers:

Q: What is New Student Conference (NSC)?
A:  NSC is a brief overview of the services of our University. It covers the most important information that you need to know including financial aid and billing. Dinner is served and you are able to purchase a parking pass and have your student ID made. Check-in starts at 5:30pm on January 11, 2018 in the University Center Building.

Q: Can I bring a guest to NSC?
A: Parents, guardians or family members are welcome to attend. Guests are charged a $10/person fee and it is to be paid on-site when checking in. We accept cash and credit cards.

Q: How long until my hold is removed?
A: Please allow at least 2 business days for someone to review your form submission and remove your hold. During busier seasons, it may take up to 3-4 business days. We process them as quickly as possible.

Q: When can I register for classes? 
A: Upon competition of online orientation, an academic advisor will reach out to you to schedule an advising appointment. During that appointment, you will register for classes. You can reach advising at advising@tamut.edu.
