Malik Sanders: Liberty-Eylau grad soars to great heights at A&M-Texarkana

Attend any student life event at Texas A&M University-Texarkana, and you’ll more than likely run into Malik Sanders.

Since arriving on campus in August 2016, the sophomore biology major from Texarkana, Texas, has become extremely involved in the Campus Activities Board, helping to organize a variety of social and educational events for students at the university.

He’s the type of student you might see at a baseball game or in the library. He’s just that involved and dedicated to achieving his goal of becoming a pharmacist and remaining in Texas to one day build a home and raise a family.

The 2016 Liberty-Eylau High School graduate was all set to attend another Texas university, when a visit to Texas A&M University-Texarkana changed the course of his college career.

“I’ve known (Director of Admissions) Toney Favors my whole life,” Malik said. “He encouraged me to come to the campus for a visit … and the rest is history.”

During that campus visit, Malik said he felt right at home.

“I immediately loved the campus and the people I met,” Malik said. “I knew I didn’t want to go anywhere else.”

As a student at Liberty-Eylau High School, Malik played in the band, served on the student council and sang in the school choir. He was a member of the cheerleading team, serving as the Leopards mascot, and served on the staffs of the school newspaper and yearbook.

At Sunset Missionary Baptist Church, where he met Favors, he sings in the choir and services on the praise team, the drill team and as an usher.

“I don’t really know how to be inactive,” he joked.

With plans to go to pharmacy school after graduating from A&M-Texarkana, Malik takes his studies very seriously.

“Math is my favorite subject, and I also enjoy science and chemistry. I always knew I wanted to go into a medical field that did not involve blood,” he said. “Pharmacy seemed like the perfect choice.”

Malik serves on the Orientation-Team at A&M-Texarkana and is a campus spirit leader. He is an event coordinator for Campus Activities Board and a student worker in the Office of Student Life.

“I came to visit A&M-Texarkana, and I loved it. I don’t plan on going anywhere else,” he said. “I plan to stay here all four years.”

In his short time on campus, Malik has made a definite impression on faculty, staff and his peers at the university.

“Malik has stood out to me as a prominent student leader since the first time I met him,” said Michael Stephenson, Student Life coordinator at A&M-Texarkana. “I have the pleasure of serving as one of his supervisors at his on-campus job, and I am able to see first-hand his work ethic and passion for student involvement. He is a model student that exemplifies our core values, and I am proud to be part of his educational journey.”

Malik is the son of LaMetrice Creer and Fred Sanders and grandson of Sandra Creer. His siblings are Andrea Creer, Cardell Creer and Shamar Sanders.
