Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Is the May 1st application deadline firm?
A:  We will continue to receive and review applications until we seat a full cohort of 20.

Q:  Is the MSW program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education?
A:  We received approval for pre-candidacy status from CSWE and have started the accreditation process through the CSWE Commission on Accreditation.  This is a 3-year process, but it is retroactive.  Students beginning the program in Fall 2020 will be grandfathered into a fully accredited program.

Q:  Can I mail in my MSW application?
A:  No.  The application is to be completed electronically with the exception of transcripts.  Official transcripts can either be emailed to transcripts@tamut.edu or mailed to the Graduate Coordinator.

Q:   Can I get credit for work or life experience?
A:  No.  The Council on Social Work Education does not allow students to receive credit for work or life experience.

Q:  How many hours of field practicum are required for the program?
A:  Students are required to complete 900 clock hours of supervised practice in a field placement.  This is broken down over two years with 400 hours in the generalist placement and 500 hours in the specialized clinical placement.

Q:  Can I do my practicum at my place of employment?
A:  We prefer that you gain your experience in organizations separate from your employment.  However individual adjustments may be made.  Students who do one of their field placements in their place of employment must do so with a different supervisor and doing different tasks than their regular job.  No students may do a field practicum in the same agency for both the generalist and specialized placements.

Q:  Can I do the program either part time or full time?
A:  Yes, you may choose either full time, or one of two part-time options.
