Application Deadlines

Application Deadline for Fall Admission 10:59 p.m. CST March 15th | *NOTE: EXTENDED TO APRIL 30TH
Application Deadline for Spring Admission 10:59 p.m. CST October 15th

All prerequisite courses must be completed either prior to or be in progress during the semester in which you are applying for admission to the nursing program.

How Do I Apply? 

Step 1. Submit application for admission to Texas A&M University- Texarkana via the link of Admissions webpage

  • Designate BSN (Four Year Nursing Program) as your major
  • Meet all University admission requirements and submit all university required documentation

Step 2. Submit application to the nursing program before 10:59 p.m. the day of the deadline listed above. For paper application, click hereAll required documentation must be uploaded to the application before application can be submitted. The online application verification process can take up to two weeks. The application and all required documents should be submitted 4 weeks before the program deadline to ensure it is received.

Full admission into the nursing program can be achieved after meeting all admission requirements and completion of the pre-requisite courses. You will receive notice of acceptance into the program by email and will be required to respond to acceptance by email in order to reserve your place in the program. Admission decisions are based on applicant ranking, clinical site availability and faculty availability.

Requirements for Admission

All prerequisite courses must be completed either prior to or be in progress during the semester in which you are applying for admission to the nursing program.

1. Must be accepted to Texas A&M University-Texarkana as a student before applying to the nursing program. All required university admission documentation must be submitted to the university’s Admissions department for them to make an admissions decision. Required documentation must be submitted to their office prior to applying to the nursing program.

2. Cumulative GPA of 2.8. GPA at time of application to nursing program is used for nursing admission decisions.

3. Students cannot be missing more than 3 semester credit hours of general education courses prior to being accepted into the nursing program.

4. Grade of C or higher (with no more than 2 attempts for each course in the last 5 years) required in the following completed courses.

  • Composition I
  • Composition II
  • Anatomy and Physiology I
  • Anatomy and Physiology I Lab
  • Anatomy and Physiology II
  • Anatomy and Physiology II Lab
  • Nutrition
  • Microbiology
  • Microbiology Lab
  • Chemistry
  • Pathophysiology (NURS 331): must be junior level (course number begins with a 3) and must be 3 semester credit hours; prerequisite of BIOL 2402 must be complete prior to enrolling in NURS 331 (It is recommended to complete NURS 331 at TAMUT)
  • Professional Concepts (NURS 332): must be junior level (course number begins with a 3) and must be 3 semester credit hours (It is recommended to complete NURS 332 at TAMUT)

5. The HESI A2 Entrance exam is required for consideration of admission to the TAMUT traditional BSN nursing program. All portions of the exam must be taken, including a personality profile and a learning style assessment. A minimum cumulative exam score of 80% is required, with a minimum of 75% composite score required in the English, Math, and Science portions of the exam. The HESI A2 may be taken for a maximum of two (2) times per academic year. If unable to obtain the minimum score on the first attempt, the entrance exam may be repeated once between September 1st and August 31st.  The applicant must wait 6 weeks to retake the exam from the initial attempt.  Based on nursing program application due dates, we recommend the applicant take the HESI A2 exam:

  • The most recent score sheet will be counted; exam scores cannot be pieced together.
  • The overall science composite score must be 75% or higher OR if the composite score is below 75%, the average of the Anatomy & Physiology section and the Biology section scores will be averaged and accepted for the sciences composite score if the average equals 75% or higher.
  • Scores taken for another university may be accepted, but scores must be sent by Elsevier to nursing@tamut.edu
  • All attempts of the HESI A2 entrance exam must be taken prior to the application deadline. Any score sheet submitted to the department after the application deadline will not be accepted. More information and scheduling the HESI A2 Entrance Exam can be found here.
  • There are various HESI A2 resources (study guides, online guides, website, etc.) to help prepare for the exam.
  • Students should visit: Exam Day: What to Expect and What am I allowed to do during my exam? to become familiar with the HESI A2 testing procedures before scheduling the exam.
  • Any ProctorU “flagged” incidents indicating possible breaches in academic integrity while taking the exam will result in the exam results becoming void. Examples of flagged incidents include: looking off camera, face not being completely visible during exam, talking out loud for any reason, wearing unauthorized items (hoodies, hats and/or earphones/ear buds) and/or someone else in the room with you at any time during the exam.

6. Two letters of reference and completed survey. These can be from current or former faculty, advisors, or employers who know you in a scholarly or work-related role by the specified deadlines above (March 15th for fall admission, October 15th for spring admission). The letters should describe the relationship with you and your personal characteristics (punctuality, teamwork, integrity, perseverance). The letter must be physically signed by the person referring you (computer generated font signatures will not be accepted), must include their contact information should any questions arise and be uploaded to your NursingCAS application.

7. Upload a letter of intent explaining your interest in nursing as your profession and why you chose this program of nursing by the specified deadlines above (March 15th for fall admission, October 15th for spring admission).
