College of Arts, Sciences and Education
"We are a community of scholars who challenge each other to lives of inquiry."
That’s our mission in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education. The faculty adopted the mission in the spring of 2018. Here are a few things we like about it:
- “We.” The first word is inclusive. It sets a tone. The College of Arts, Sciences, and Education aspires to be the kind of place that welcomes and values everyone.
- “Community.” We come from different places, we study different things, and we may be headed in different directions, but while we’re here, we practice respect and forge lasting friendships.
- “Scholars.” Some may say that the word sounds quaint, but we’re proud to identify as people who study and are curious.
- “ . . . challenge each other to lives of inquiry.” We are here to improve not just our lives, but those of others. And not just for now and not just in the classroom, but from now on and in all aspects of our lives.
- Finally, we like that our mission statement is a single, straightforward sentence and not a parade of bullet points. The fact that it’s a sentence makes it easy to remember, and therefore easy to live out. And what better test of a mission than the lives of the people who embrace it?
