Your SOAR Guide

A Step-by-Step Guide to Preparing for your Orientation

Before Orientation:

  • Select your orientation date and make sure you register (if you have not done so already).
  • Make arrangements to attend orientation from 9:30am-4:00pm on the date of your choice. All events will happen in the University Center building. You may park in any parking lot; look for signs to direct you to University Center if you are unfamiliar with campus.
  • Discuss your overnight housing options and choose the best option for you and your family. Students are permitted to stay at our on-campus residence hall, Bringle Lake Village. To make a reservation to stay on campus, please email soar@tamut.edu if you did not indicate this on your SOAR registration form. Parents/guests must make their own arrangements at a local hotel. We have a hotel block set up at the Hilton Garden Inn at 2910 South Cowhorn Creek Loop, Texarkana TX 75501. Simply call 903-792-1065 and mention TAMUT when making your reservation. Our nightly rate is $85+tax and includes breakfast.
  • Review the schedule of events, using the timelines to help plan your visit.
  • Email soar@tamut.edu if you or a family member may need accommodations during your visit.
  • Course registration happens at SOAR. Due to the condensed schedule, it is important you are registration-ready when you arrive. To find out if you meet the TSI requirement or need to take the ALEKS assessment, please see the "preparing for course registration" section below.

Preparing for Course Registration

  • Required Texas Success Initiative Assessment
All new students are required to complete the TSI placement assessment. The Texas law requires all entering college students to be assessed for college readiness in Reading, Writing and Math, unless you qualify for an exemption. We will be offering this exam online, through Examity, Zoom meeting and In-Person testing the day prior to you orientation.  Exemptions from TSIA are as listed below. Please check with your academic advisor to see if you qualify for an exemption.

    • SAT with a minimum score of 480 on the Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing test will exempt you from bot the reading and writing sections of the TSI. A minimum score of 530 on the Math test shall exempt you from the Math section of the TSI.
    • STARR End-of- Course with a minimum Level 2 score of 4000 on the English III will be exempt reading and writing, and a minimum Level 2 score of 4000 on the Algebra II will be exempt in the mathematics section.
    • A student who has graduated with an associate or Baccalaureate degree from an institution of higher education.
  • Required Math Placement Assessment
All STEM based majors are required to complete the online ALEKS mathematics and statistics placement assessment through Respondus Monitor and Face-to-Face. The following majors require ALEKS Placement Assessment: Biology, Chemistry, Chemistry Education, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Math, Math Education and Mechanical Engineering.  ALEKS assesses your abilities and places you in the appropriate course. You cannot be registered for a math or statistics course at orientation if you have not completed the ALEKS.  In addition to placement, ALEKS offers learning modules to help you brush up on math skills you may have forgotten.
    • Begin ALEKS early and invest at least two hours into the assessment. Plan to take the practice assessment at least one month prior to orientation, which allows you time to review your first attempt, work through the learning modules, and retake the assessment if you are not satisfied with your results. Please visit our website under the Testing Center Tab for more information, obtain the access code, and begin the assessment.

If you have any questions or need clarification on TSI or ALEKS, email advising@tamut.edu.
