History and Political Science; Academic Honors Program
Dr. Craig M Nakashian is the Dean of the Honors College and a Professor of History at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Dr. Nakashian teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on ancient, medieval, and early modern European history, as well as medieval Japan, the history of medieval film, and the history of the future. His research focuses on medieval religion, warfare, and culture.
Dr. Nakashian was hired at Texas A&M University-Texarkana as an Assistant Professor in 2010, promoted to Associate Professor in 2016, and Professor in 2022. Prior to TAMUT, he taught at Southeast Missouri State University, Syracuse University, the University of Rochester, and the Eastman School of Music. He has served as the Director of the Academic Honors Program since 2014 and chair of the Department of History and Political Science since 2020.
Dr. Nakashian received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Rochester in 2010 with a focus on medieval Europe and minor fields in medieval Japan, archaeology, and art history. He received a MA in Medieval History from Durham University in 2001. He received dual bachelors degree in History and Government from Western New England University in 2000.
Dr. Nakashian generally teaches courses in ancient, medieval, and early modern history, as well as courses in humanities and interdisciplinary studies. He has won awards for teaching from the University of Rochester, Texas A&M University-Texarkana, and the Texas A&M University System, and he was nominated for a teaching award at Syracuse University.

Dr. Nakashian’s research has focused on medieval religion, warfare, and culture. He published a monograph entitled “Warrior Churchmen of Medieval England, 1000-1250” in 2016 and he co-edited a volume entitled “Prowess, Piety, and Public Order: Studies in Honor of Richard W. Kaeuper” in 2017. He has also published several peer-reviewed articles and chapters, as well as over forty scholarly book reviews. In 2023 he published the Oxford Bibliographies in Military History entry on “Christianity and Warfare in the Medieval West.”
