Dr. Julien is a full professor of English at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. He received his doctoral degree for comparative studies in discourse and society in 2005 from the University of Minnesota. He is a lead principal investigator for a $50,000 Teagle Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities grant seeking to revitalize the role of humanities in general education. His most recent publication is “Can the White Boy Speak? Coming to Terms with the Color-Blind Li(n)e” published by SUNY Press in 2021. His areas of expertise include world literature (especially short stories and theory), literary theory (especially continental philosophy and critical theory), and the study of popular music. Guiding his research in all these areas is the study of race.
Dr. Julien joined the TAMUT Department in 2010.
Beginning in 1994, Dr. Julien earned his B.A. in English at Eastern Illinois University. After this, he completed an M.A. in literature at the Western Illinois University in 1999 and received his PhD in Comparative Studies in Discourse and Society from the University of Minnesota in Los Angeles in 2005.
Dr. Julien, though skilled in many aspects, focuses on several things for his expertise. These include world literature, literary theory and the study of popular music. To further narrow these down, it includes short stories & continental philosophy.
Julien teaches both undergraduate and graduate classes ranging from introduction to much more concentrated topics. Several special classes include Popular Music as Literature and focusing on select short stories.
