Bennie Walthall Award

This Tuesday, September 24 at 12:20 p.m. in the foyer in front of the Library on the Main Campus, Texas A&M University-Texarkana will award the 2012 winners of the Bennie Walthall Award for the best research papers written in A&M-Texarkana history courses.  By means of a grant by the late Mr. Bennie Walthall of Texarkana, AR, the university will award a total of $1,000 in prize monies to four individuals.  Also, the College of Education and Liberal Arts will present each winner with a certificate.  

The 2012-2013 winners:
 

The Best Graduate History Paper Award goes to Corinne Patterson for Pol Pot: Disappointment Leads to Destruction? (prize: $300)

The Second Best Graduate History Paper Award goes to Michael Touchstone for The Ritual Sacrifices of the Aztecs  (prize: $200)

The Best Undergraduate History Paper Award goes to Ryan Cobb for The Effect of the Trans-Siberian Railway on the Russo-Japanese War (prize: $300)

The Second Best Undergraduate History Paper Award goes to Alana Briley for Exploring the Negro Family—An Analytical Essay on Patrick Moynihan’s The Negro Family: A Case for National Action (prize: $200)

The Office of Student Life will provide sandwiches, fruit trays, cookies and drinks for the event. The event is open to the public.

The contest only considered graduate papers that were a minimum of 2,000 words (including documentation), and had a minimum of five sources, four of which were primary documents or peer-reviewed articles or books.  Undergraduate papers had to have a minimum of 1,200 words (including documentation), and have a minimum of four sources, three of which are primary documents or peer-reviewed articles or books.
