Texas A&M University-Texarkana Professor wins Award
A Texas A&M University-Texarkana College of Business faculty member has been awarded the Texas A&M University System’s Regents Professor Award.
Joan Brumm, Ph.D., CPA, received a medallion by the A&M System as a symbol of her accomplishment.
Dr. Brumm is the third A&M-Texarkana faculty member to receive the prestigious Regents Professor Award. Previous recipients have been Dr. Doris Davis, professor of English in 2005, and Dr. Tom Wagy, professor of history in 2008.
Dr. Brumm also was recognized as the 2012 A&M-Texarkana Alumni Association’s Distinguished Faculty Member recipient.
The A&M System Board of Regents established the Regents Professor Award program in 1996. The purpose of the award is to recognize and honor individuals at the rank of professor or equivalent who have provided exemplary service as faculty members not only to their university, agency or health science center component, but also to the community, the state of Texas, and/or at the international level. This award is specifically for faculty within the nine A&M System institutions, including the Galveston campus, System Health Science Center and the agricultural and engineering programs.
“I feel so honored to receive this award and thankful for the support the university and my colleagues have given me,” Dr. Brumm said.
Originally from Detroit, Mich., Dr. Brumm resides in Bloomburg, Texas. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Wayne State University in 1976. She obtained her Master of Business Administration from A&M-Texarkana, then East Texas State University, in 1990, and a Ph.D. in accounting from Louisiana State University in 1996.
Dr. Brumm serves as professor of accounting. From 1999 to 2003, she was an associate professor of accounting, and from 1995 to 1999, she held the title of assistant professor of accounting.
A certified public accountant, she is a member of American Institute of CPAs and member of the American Accounting Association. Her previous work experience includes former owner of an accounting and tax office and past comptroller of companies in Hawaii. She has published journal articles and has made several presentations at professional conferences.
Regents Professor nominations are solicited every year. A call for nominations is issued by the chancellor each February for the current fiscal year to all system chief executive officers. The CEOs initiate an internal nomination process within their respective organizations and forward the nominations to the chancellor through the vice chancellor for Academic Affairs Office by late June or early July of the current year.
A system-level committee reviews all nominations for eligibility requirements. Upon completion of the system review and concurrence by the chancellor, nominee recommendations are forwarded to the Board of Regents, and formal action is requested to grant the designation of Regents Professor. Action by the board most often occurs at the December board meeting.
