A&M-Texarkana to Host PLA Workshop to Support Adult Learners

Published: May 26, 2015

On Tuesday, June 2, Texas A&M University-Texarkana will host a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) workshop entitled “Designing a PLA-friendly Degree Behind the Scenes: The Administrative Side of PLA Marketing PLA: A Narrative-based Approach”.  The workshop will focus on how to build and manage a growing PLA program, will be held on the A&M-Texarkana campus in Eagle Hall starting at 9:00am, and will cost $25 for workshop materials and lunch.

Prior Learning Assessment is a term used to describe learning gained outside a traditional academic environment, such as working, participating in employer training programs, serving in the military, studying independently, volunteering or doing community service, and studying open source courseware. The BAAS Program at Texas A&M University-Texarkana has been successfully supporting adult learners through PLA for almost 40 years and is now experiencing great success through a partnership with the Texas A&M University System and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL). Last year, A&M Texarkana joined a partnership with the Texas A&M System and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning to promote prior learning assessment for non-traditional students. Two other schools, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Prairie View A&M University, also joined the initiative.

“What I have learned over the past year is that schools want to offer PLA opportunities to their students, but they are unsure of how to get a program like that off the ground and how to administrate it once it is in action. That is what this workshop will address: PLA in Action, a behind the scenes look at our program that has been successfully serving non-traditionals since 1978,” said BAAS Coordinator and Instructor of Adult Education Lisa Myers.
