Texas A&M University-Texarkana Students Showcase Their Research Projects

More than 100 undergraduate students at Texas A&M University-Texarkana recently showcased their academic research for the fall 2015 semester at the Program for Learning and Community Engagement poster showcase in Eagle Hall of the University Center.

Winners of the PLACE poster awards with the theme of “Economic Opportunity” were Nancy Gathright, a senior Applied Arts and Sciences major from Texarkana, Texas, first place; Mitchell Roberts, a sophomore General Studies major from Texarkana, Texas, second place; and Gwendolyn Chatman, a senior Applied Arts and Sciences major from Texarkana, Arkansas, third place.

Winners of the College of Education and Liberal Arts poster awards were Fernanda Hernandez, a senior English major from Wake Village, Texas, first place; Haley Hamilton, a senior Applied Arts and Sciences major from Foreman, Arkansas, second place; and Caleb Hill, a senior Applied Arts and Sciences major from Hooks, Texas, third place.

“Practice presenting posters is important because students gain experience for professional conference presentations,” said Dr. Brandy Moore, assistant professor of psychology at A&M-Texarkana and contest coordinator.

PLACE is a faculty-led program designed to create a community of learners comprising A&M-Texarkana students, faculty, staff and the community at large.

“Faculty members annually choose a common theme around which to organize a lecture series and other activities that provide focal points for learning and discussion,” said Dr. Michael Perri, associate professor of history and chair of the PLACE Committee.

PLACE’s goal is to expose its community of learners to a diversity of ideas from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds. This year’s theme is “Economic Opportunity.”

“As a learning institution, we think it's vital to provide opportunities to engage our campus and community in issues important to us locally, regionally, nationally and globally,” said Dr. Corrine Hinton, assistant professor of English.
