Guest Lecturer to speak on “The Forgotten Reformation: Spain, the Inquisition and the Age of Empires”
Dr. Wayne Bowen
Texas A&M University-Texarkana Graduate Studies and Research, in conjunction with the University Honors program and Department of History, will host “The Forgotten Reformation: Spain, the Inquisition and the Age of Empires” featuring guest lecturer Dr. Wayne H. Bowen on Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in University Center 210, A&M-Texarkana, 7101 University Drive, Texarkana, Texas.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
Dr. Bowen is professor and chair of the Department of History and director of University Studies at Southeast Missouri State University at Cape Girardeau.
A noted author and historian, Dr. Bowen’s book, “Truman, Spain and the Cold War,” will be released this year by the University of Missouri Press. His other books include “The History of Saudi Arabia,” “Spain and the American Civil War,” “Undoing Saddam: From Occupation to Sovereignty in Northern Iraq,” “A Military History of Modern Spain” co-edited with Jose Alvarez, “Spain during World War II” and “Spaniards and Nazi Germany: Collaboration in the New Order,” winner of the 2001 Phi Alpha Theta Book Award.
“We are excited to have Dr. Bowen come to discuss the central role that Spain played in the Reformation and the creation of the post-Reformation world. These events, while 500 years old, still reverberate throughout our society today,” said Dr. Craig Nakashian, director of the University Honors program and assistant professor of history at A&M-Texarkana.
In addition to numerous scholarly articles and conference presentations, Dr. Bowen has participated in a multi-national research project called “The United States, Germany, Great Britain, Japan and their Relations with Spain during the Second World War and the early Postwar (1939-1953),” which is funded by the European Union, Kingdom of Spain, and the Universitat Rovira I Virgili, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. He has served on the Advisory Board of “SEGLE XX Revista catalana d’història,” a multilingual and electronic history journal, from 2008-present.
Dr. Bowen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern California in 1990 and masters’ and doctoral degrees from Northwestern University in 1992 and 1996, respectively.
He is a member of the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa, Association for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies, Society for Military History and Southern Historical Association European History Section.
