A&M-Texarkana’s Red River Valley Books Series to Present Author of ‘Trammel’s Trace’

Gary Pinkerton, author of the book “Trammel’s Trace: The First Road to Texas from the North,” will be telling the story of this early road from Arkansas to Texas on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at Pecan Point Brewing Company, 213 Main Street, Texarkana, Texas.

The reading and presentation will begin at 3 p.m. A book signing will follow. Admission is free, and attendees are invited to purchase food and beverages from the Pecan Point menu.

Pinkerton is a native of East Texas, and the Trace crosses family land near Mt. Enterprise. His book is published by Texas A&M University Press as part of Texas A&M University-Texarkana’s Red River Valley Books series.

Trammel’s Trace, named for Nicholas Trammell, was the first route from the United States into the northern boundaries of Spanish Texas. From the Great Bend of the Red River it intersected with El Camino Real in Nacogdoches.

By the early 19th century, Trammel’s Trace was largely a smuggler’s trail that delivered horses and contraband into the region. It was a microcosm of the migration, lawlessness, and conflict that defined the period.

Evidence of Trammel’s Trace remains across seven Texas counties. Pinkerton and a group of fellow “rut nuts” are actively engaged in educating and informing landowners to enlist their support in preserving this part of history.
