Texarkana Honors Colloquium to Highlight Fighting Viruses

Dr. Ben Neuman, associate professor of biology and chair of the Biology Department at Texas A&M University-Texarkana, will be the featured speaker at the final University Honors colloquium of the fall 2016 semester on Thursday, Dec. 1, at noon in University Center 217 on the A&M-Texarkana campus, 7101 University Ave., Texarkana, Texas.

Dr. Neuman will speak on “Fighting Viruses by Tweaking Lipid Metabolism: Exploring the World of Designer Drugs that Could Keep You Thin and Virus Free.”

“The University Honors program colloquia series is an opportunity for students and faculty to present research to the university community, and we are thrilled that Dr. Neuman has agreed to share his findings. It promises to be a fascinating conversation,” said Dr. Craig Nakashian, director of the University Honors program.

Dr. Neuman has worked with viruses in England and at Scripps in San Diego for nearly 20 years. His lab research has focused on coronaviruses like MERS and common colds. He also has worked on haemorrhagic fever viruses similar to Ebola, flu, viruses similar to Zika, viruses similar to HIV, vaccines and hunting new viruses. He also has experience with bacteria and phage therapy.

Since 2013, Dr. Neuman has appeared roughly once a week on TV and radio news answering questions about public health issues.

The Honors Colloquia are a series of scholarly talks and presentations offered throughout the academic year. They provide a venue for University Honors students and faculty to present their research.

The University Honors program also brings speakers to campus from outside the university community.

The colloquium is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
