A&M-Texarkana to Present Hispanic Heritage Celebration
The Texas A&M University-Texarkana Multicultural Association will present an Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the University Center on the A&M-Texarkana campus, 7101 University Ave., Texarkana, Texas.
The event will feature a mariachi band, folkloric and tropical dances, and a Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration.
“The Hispanic Heritage Celebration is an annual event hosted by the Multicultural Association to celebrate Latino culture,” said Multicultural Association President Alana Briley. “This year we have a Day of the Dead theme, but we will also pay homage to tropical Latino culture with music and dancing from Colombia and the Caribbean.”
Participating in the activities will be 15 students from Mexico who are visiting A&M-Texarkana through Nov. 18 as part of the Proyecta 100,000 initiative. This is the third time A&M-Texarkana has been selected by the Mexican government for the Proyecta program, which aims to send 100,000 Mexican students to the U.S. and 50,000 American students to Mexico by the year 2018.
“This is going to be an exciting and cultural event that the university can be proud of. The Multicultural Association has worked extremely hard to ensure that Hispanic heritage is celebrated in an exemplary and memorable way,” said Dr. Brian Matthews, Multicultural Association faculty adviser. “Dr. Luz Mary Rincon has been extremely helpful by giving us ideas and a historic perspective of Hispanic culture to incorporate in the festivities. We are especially appreciative of our sponsors, Guaranty Bank & Trust, the International Studies Office and On the Border, for their generous support. We are looking forward to a great event that will give everyone an opportunity to participate while learning about Hispanic culture at the same time.”
The Multicultural Association is a student-led organization that promotes cultural awareness and education of various ethnic and racial groups present in our community through educational campus and community events.
