A&M-Texarkana to Host First-Ever Pink Fest

The Texas A&M University-Texarkana Staff Council and Wellness Committee will host the first-ever Pink Fest Breast Cancer Awareness Festival on Friday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first floor of the University Center on the A&M-Texarkana campus, 7101 University Ave., Texarkana, Texas.

Event co-chair Ayla Baldwin, Benefits and Wellness Coordinator, said Pink Fest is designed to honor those who have fought breast cancer and to provide important educational information concerning the disease.

“A&M-Texarkana wants you to ‘think pink’,” said festival co-chair Venus Lillis, Director of Advising and Student Success, in encouraging the community to attend the event, which will feature more than 11 cancer education booths, a Pink Cake Walk, a Pink Out Dress-up Contest and a Pink Pumpkin Decorating Contest.

Rhonda Dolberry, a 10-year survivor of breast cancer and 2017 Komen Texarkana Race for the Cure Survivor of the Year, will be Pink Fest’s special guest. She will welcome everyone to the event and announce the winner of the Pink Out Dress-up Contest.

Tammy McKamie with the CHRISTUS St. Michael W. Temple Webber Cancer Center will present “Is Cancer in Your Genes” at 10:30 a.m. in the TEXAR Room (University Center 116).

The Cancer Center at Wadley Regional Medical Center will provide breast cancer simulator models.

Those who would like to enter the Pink Pumpkin Contest are asked to deliver their decorated pink pumpkins to the University Center prior to 10 a.m. for display and judging.

Volunteers are needed to bring sweet pink treats for the Pink Cake Walk, which will be ongoing throughout the event.

The Pink Out Dress-up Contest will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Eagle Hall of the University Center. At 12:45 p.m., group photo will be taken with the  pink Jeep. Those who aren’t in costume should wear a

Students, faculty, staff and campus visitors are creating a pink ribbon wall to support and honor friends and family members who have been affected by breast cancer. The wall will be displayed throughout the month of October.

Faculty, staff and students also may register Friday for the Eagles for the Cure team for the Texarkana Race for the Cure on Oct. 21 at the Four States Fairgrounds.  Only cash and checks will be accepted.
