A&M-Texarkana Students to Showcase Presentations on ‘A Demon-Haunted World’
Students in Dr. Rebecca Martindale’s University Foundations class at Texas A&M University-Texarkana will showcase PechaKucha-style presentations on the fall 2017 university common reader on Friday, Dec. 1, from 1-1:5- p.m. in University Center 217 on the A&M-Texarkana campus, 7101 University Ave., Texarkana, Texas.
“PechaKucha is a concise style of presentation designed in Tokyo by two architectural designers, Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham Architecture,” said Dr. Martindale in describing the students’ presentations. “Their initial thoughts were that architects talk too much. The idea was to bring a presentation down to a single visual that supports the discussion topic, with a maximum of 20 slides and only 20 seconds per slide to discuss the topic – roughly 6.40 minutes per speaker. This format can assist with eliminating ‘death by PowerPoint.’
“PechaKucha nights have spread globally to allow persons of like interests to gather and use this format to share ideas, thoughts and stories; anything is open for discussion.”
Dr. Martindale, Philip DeRouen, Roz Swofford, Abram Garza and Caleigh Bailon will be presenting this method as part of the Program for Learning and Community Engagement lecture series covering chapters from the fall 2017 common reader, “A Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark,” by Carl Sagan.
University Foundations is an introductory course to higher education designed to assist students in becoming engaged learners and high-performing students within the academic community. All new freshmen are required to complete this course, and it is taught exclusively by full-time faculty.
PLACE is a faculty-led program designed to create a community of learners comprising A&M-Texarkana students, faculty, staff and the community at large. PLACE chooses an annual theme around which to organize a lecture series and other activities that provide focal points for learning and discussion. This year’s theme is “Science and Technology.”
The common-reader experience allows students to bond with each other as a community of learners in sharing a reading experience and participating in conversations and activities on campus and beyond associated with the annual academic theme.
