A&M-Texarkana Veterans Services Center Wins Texas Veterans Commission’s Education Excellence Award

Published: October 13, 2022

TEXARKANA, Texas – Texas A&M University Texarkana and its Veterans Services Center was recently awarded the 2022 Texas Veterans Commission’s Education Excellence Award. Governor Abbott announced the 17 colleges and universities across the state that received this prestigious award.

The award is presented to colleges and universities that provide exceptional support and resources for student veterans and veteran-connected students. The award is broken down into three levels- gold, silver, and bronze and is awarded based on the level of services provided. A dedicated space to meet and study, priority registration, academic advising, access to computers and other resources, and work study opportunities are some of the factors considered when presenting the awards. Texas A&M University-Texarkana received the Silver Award for 2022.

The Veterans Services Center at A&M-Texarkana is located on the first floor of the Building for Academic and Student Services, and provides a large, comfortable space for students to study, gather, and hold events. Robert Hernandez, a 30-year veteran of the United States Air Force, is the Manager of the Veterans Services Center at A&M-Texarkana.

“As a veteran myself, it is an honor to be able to continue to work with my brothers and sisters in arms and their family members,” said Hernandez. While wearing the uniform of our military these veterans made numerous sacrifices, and so did their families- from missed birthdays and anniversaries, to missing the births of their children. Transitioning out of the military is difficult and adding the transition to a college campus can be very stressful. In the Veteran Services Center, we try our best to give back to those who gave so much for our nation. We offer One-Stop-Shop services to our military-affiliated students, giving personalized service and assistance from admissions until they cross the graduation stage.”

“We are very proud of our Veterans Services Center,” said A&M-Texarkana President Dr. Emily Cutrer. “It is a wonderful facility fully dedicated to helping meet the needs of our military-connected students. This award is a testament to the wonderful work done there every day.”
