Dr. Genia Bullock

A&M-Texarkana alumna Genia Bullock is in love with learning. She believes in leading by example, which is one of the reasons she has earned multiple degrees as a student at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctorate were all earned at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. She is one of only four A&M-Texarkana alumni who have earned degrees at all three levels from the university.

Originally from Kansas, Bullock began her college career at Wichita State University. Rather than continuing that path she became a certified computer technician and went to work for IBM as a computer engineer who serviced computers for Boeing. Through her job she met her husband Ron (originally from Nashville, AR) who worked for IBM as well. When the couple moved to Texarkana the market size would not support them both working for IBM, so Genia went in a different direction. She worked for 3 in 1 Office Products before eventually taking on the role of Coordinator of Public Relations for the Texarkana Arkansas School District. Nearly two decades later, she’s still there.

When she began working in education, she realized that it was important for her to complete her degree. She began taking classes at Texarkana College and Texas A&M University-Texarkana before eventually enrolling in the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences Program (BAAS) at A&M-Texarkana. The BAAS program is designed to help students adapt their previous work experience into a framework that allows them to earn college credit for the skills they have mastered in their career. Bullock graduated from A&M-Texarkana with her bachelor’s degree in 2009, her master’s degree in 2012, and her Doctor of Education in Education Leadership in 2019. She is now an adjunct faculty member at the university, where she gets to be a part of the team that taught her.

Bullock said the flexibility of her courses played a major role in her success as a student at A&M-Texarkana, allowing her to take classes while also working and being a mother to three children. “I was able to benefit from online courses,” she said. “Even though I was an online student I was still able to talk with my professors. I never felt like I was removed from campus even though I was attending online.”

“I love the idea of learning,” said Bullock. It is this love of learning that has kept her working in a public-school setting for nearly twenty years. “I love the impact teachers have on young lives,” she added. “While I’m not in the classroom, I still have an opportunity to watch students grow. I get to see them from kindergarten through graduation. In my position I get to shine a light on the district and the great things our students are accomplishing. To be a part in some small way brings me great joy.”

Genia was the recipient of the A.E. Alton Educational Award presented by the Greater Texarkana Branch of the NAACP at the 2022 Freedom Fund Awards Banquet and was recently named the Fox Sports Texarkana Woman of the year for 2022.

Genia has been married to her husband Ron for 30 years. They have three grown children- Jordan, Jada, and Jasmine, and now have their first grandbaby, Aaliyah. Their grandparent names are Lolli and Pop.
