Waivers and Exemptions
Listed below are State Waivers and Exemptions processed through TAMUT, as well as application information and eligibility requirements. Eligible students are responsible for applying, submitting required documentation, and ensuring the waiver or Exemption has been applied towards eligible tuition and fees for the current semester. Students are responsible for any payment of tuition and fees that is not eligible for coverage by the waiver or Exemption. Students are subject to late payment penalties and registration changes if tuition and fees are unpaid.
Dropping a course(s)
Immediately notify the Business Office if you drop course(s) or Withdrawal from the University to adjust your waiver/Exemption amount. If not action is taken, Collection penalties will take effect after 90 days.
Exemptions
Exemptions allow special groups of Texas Residents or Non-Residents to enroll and pay reduced tuition and fees.

SB1210 Exempt: Texas Senate Bill 1210 requires all students to receive continuing awards of most exemptions and some waivers. Unless the EXPT or waiver is exempt from SB 1210, the student must meet the University’s Financial aid GPA minimum for Satisfactory Academic Progress and must not have excess credit hours at the beginning of the semester to receive the waiver or exemption moving forward.

Adopted Students Currently or Formerly in Foster Care

- Eligibility Requirements:
- Were or currently in foster care
- Were adopted
- Were the subject of adoption assistance under Subchapter D, Chapter 162, Texas Family Code
- Must be under 25 years of age to activate the exemption for the first time
Blind/Deaf Students
- Eligibility Requirements:
- TX Resident
- Provide Certification from Texas Workforce Commission

- Obtain form 3900 from Texas Workforce Commission
Children of Disabled or Deceased Firemen, Peace Officers, Game Wardens, and Employees of Correctional Institutions
- Eligibility Requirements
- Children of a disabled firefighter, peace officer, or game warden, who volunteered or was employed in the state of TX
- Children of a disabled custodial officer whom the Texas Department of Criminal Justice employed
- Children of a deceased firefighter, peace officer, of game warden who volunteered or was employed in the state of Texas who died before Sept. 1, 2000.
- Children of a deceased custodial officer who was employed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice who died before Sept. 1, 2000.

Children of POW and MIA
- Eligibility Requirements:
- Texas Resident
- Are 21 years of age or younger, or 25 years of age of younger and receiving most of his/her support from a parent
- Have documentation from the department of Defense that a parent classified as a Texas resident is missing in action or a prisoner of war.

Clinical Nurse Preceptors and/or their Children
- Eligibility Requirements:

Peace Officers Enrolled in Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice Courses
- Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a peace officer employed by the State of TX or by a political Subdivision of the State of TX
- Be an Undergraduate student enrolled in eligible criminal justice or law enforcement-related degree or certificate program
- What is Exempted: Up to 6 hours of Tuition Cost Only

High school Valedictorian
- Eligibility Requirements
- Texas Residents, Non Residents, or Foreign Students
- Graduated from an accredited high school in the State of Texas
- Graduate with the highest ranking in their high school class

- What is Exempted: Tuition Cost (No Fees) for the first 2 semesters (Fall & Spring) following HS graduation

Peace Officers and Firefighters Disabled in the Line of Duty
- Eligibility Requirements:
- TX Resident who has resided in TX for at least 12 months immediately proceeding the semester for with the Exemption is sought

TAMUT Employees and Dependents/Spouse
- Eligibility Requirements
- Full time Employee OR Recent SSC Transition Employee
- Spouse of Full Time Employee
- Children and Spouses of Full-Time Employees. Child must be claimed as a dependent on previous year tax return. (A copy of the Tax return is required)
- No GPA requirement for first-time entering students
- Continuing, students must maintain the University’s GPA requirement
- Cannot stack waiver with Institutional Scholarships (The higher value award will be received)
- Must remain full-time through the census date of each semester
