Accreditation Status of the Bachelor of Social Work Program at Texas A&M University–Texarkana
The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program at Texas A&M University–Texarkana has been granted Pre-Candidacy status by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the national accrediting body for social work education. This is the first official step in the multi-stage process toward full accreditation.
What is Pre-Candidacy?
Pre-Candidacy status means the program has submitted a plan to meet CSWE’s Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) and has been approved to move forward in the accreditation process. This designation allows the program to begin enrolling students and delivering coursework aligned with CSWE standards.
Steps to Full Accreditation:
The CSWE accreditation process consists of three key stages:
- Pre-Candidacy – Program submits a detailed plan and is approved to proceed.
- Candidacy – Program undergoes ongoing review, reporting, and site visits.
- Initial Accreditation – Full accreditation is granted after successful completion of CSWE’s review process.
- Our BSW Program is currently in the Pre-Candidacy phase and will continue working closely with CSWE toward achieving full accreditation.
What Does This Mean for Students?
Because we are in Pre-Candidacy:
The program is authorized to begin enrolling students in Fall 2025. However, degrees awarded will not be considered accredited until the program achieves full CSWE accreditation. Once full accreditation is granted, CSWE will retroactively accredit degrees of students who:
- Entered the program after Pre-Candidacy was granted, and
- Graduated after full accreditation has been officially awarded.
- This means that while students can begin coursework now, their degrees will not carry accredited status until CSWE formally grants full accreditation to the program.
